Located in panoramic position on top of a hill overlooking the sea, Populonia was one of the most important Etruscan city and preserve still today numerous testimonies of this population.
From Populonia you can enjoy a wonderful view over the Gulf of Baratti, right under the hill, on the city of Piombino and on the Islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. Because of this strategic position in the Middle Ages the princes Appiano built here the Rocca, a fortress still present and open to the public, from which they could oversee a wide stretch of sea. The town of Populonia Alta developed then around the tower with narrow alleys, streets and panoramic squares.
The most famous historic testimonies of the territory are the Etruscan necropolis protected inside the Archaeological Park. In this green area are come back to light numerous tombs of different ages. Some have been carved in stone, some in the underground. This latter are recognizable by the particular round shape that reminds of a hill.
Coming down from the town along the panoramic street that runs along the sea, you can arrive directly to the beach. Here you can find numerous thermal baths and night clubs in which have fun.
